Favourite Mod of the Year (Overall)

Post by Zombie » 13 Nov 2019 23:20

[Vote for Wolf4SDL/DOS specific] [Vote for ECWolf/LZWolf]

It's that time of year, so this makes sense!

This year has been amazing. The sheer brilliance of everything achieved has been something to behold. The Wolf3D Wiki is over 2000 pages, documenting mods, authors and overall community history. New source ports and modding opportunities are being created, and things look only set to go up from here.

This poll is for your favourite mod of the year, not including experimental releases. Let us know what you picked as your overall favourite, and why!

The games (Those marked with a * will require either ECWolf or LZWolf to run):

AstroCreep's Spicy Wolf3D Challenge* - By AstroCreep
The Golden Parrot - By Fraggeur
Grosse - By Joshua
Hallowein v3 - By Biergut
Nitemare: Hugo's Revenge* - By AstroCreep
Oops! All Puppies!* - By Dunkelschwamm
Operation: Nazi Slayer* - By Orka
Project X Insurrection (Beta) - By Richter Belmont (And others!)
Spear of Destiny Demo Fusion - By Biergut
Stranded - By Thomas Weiling
Time to Kill: Eisenfaust Edition - By Thomas Weiling and Team Raycast
The Tracy Simpson Show - By Officer-Michael-John [Note: Runs on DOS4GW (Requires DosBox), and is in Hungarian.]
Wolf-Extra Epilogue 21 - By Poet
Wolf3D Demolition* - By AstroCreep

If I missed a release, be sure to let me know!

I voted The Golden Parrot because out of everything that has come out this year, it's probably the one who's style and atmosphere has stuck with me the most. I haven't played the latest patched version, but what I played was compelling and challenging, with some nice RPG elements I wish I had understood better upon starting the game (LOOK FOR GOLD, PEOPLE!)

The depth gone into with the title is also something to appreciate, from the effects to simulate the beach/coast environments, to your reload animation taking longer than is traditional to simulate the action of loading actual gunpowder. I just wish the pirates didn't yell so loud.

There are so many releases that were amazing this year in their own rights (Project X Insurrection's animations are some of the most detailed and fluid I have ever seen in a Wolf3D mod, and Grosse is quite the experiment in abstract art), but this one ultimately falls as my favourite.
